Attend the selected partner laboratory for a blood draw. Serum is preferred. Labcorp 001628 also accepts heparin or EDTA plasma, separated from cells. Follow the selected laboratory collection instructions. This is not a home kit. No fasting is required. Avoid strenuous exercise before the draw. The balance

The Strengths. The Tradeoffs.

Strengths

  • Online ordering includes the required laboratory order through Mito.
  • Measures haptoglobin, the protein that binds free hemoglobin released when red blood cells break apart and carries it to the liver and spleen for clearance. This is not a complete hemolysis panel. LDH, bilirubin and reticulocyte testing are separate.
  • Results are delivered to the Mito dashboard after laboratory processing.

Watch-outs

  • Available in 47 states and Washington, DC. Not currently available in NJ, NY or RI.
  • The starting test price of $74.41 is the Quest Diagnostics nonmember option outside NJ, NY and RI, before its separate order fee. Other laboratory options have different prices and fees.
  • Quest Diagnostics test 502, for 47 states and Washington, DC, excluding NJ, NY and RI: $74.41 without membership or $53.15 with optional $9 monthly membership, plus a separate $15.00 order fee.
  • Labcorp test 001628, for 47 states and Washington, DC, excluding NJ, NY and RI: $131.79 without membership or $94.13 with optional $9 monthly membership, plus a separate $11.50 order fee.
  • Membership is optional. The final checkout total, cancellation and refund terms remain unverified.
  • Typical results take 1-2 days; this is not a guaranteed order-to-result deadline.
  • Low or absent haptoglobin can occur with intravascular hemolysis, megaloblastic anemia, liver disease, tissue bleeding or congenital absence. Inflammation, infection, collagen vascular disease, advanced malignancy or steroid therapy can raise haptoglobin or mask a low value, so a normal result does not exclude hemolysis. Oral contraceptives and recent transfusions can lower it; androgens can raise it. Interpret the result with LDH, reticulocytes, bilirubin and clinical history.
  • No fasting is required. Avoid strenuous exercise before the draw. Tell your clinician about acute illness, medicines and recent transfusions. A traumatic blood draw can damage red cells and distort the result.
  • Results appear in the Mito dashboard after laboratory processing. A personalized action plan requires membership; live consultations cost extra.
  • This test is marked HSA/FSA eligible. Your plan determines individual eligibility and reimbursement.
