One draw, very different totals: the listed price, order and draw fees, and the true cost of blood work
THE SHORT VERSION

Cash Prices.
Test by Test.

  • You can order most common blood tests yourself, without insurance or a doctor’s visit, from Quest, Labcorp and online sellers that use their labs.
  • Typical listed prices in the Labbrary catalog today: a complete blood count (CBC) $29, a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) $39, a lipid panel $39 and an A1c $39.
  • The lowest listed price isn’t always the total. Some sellers add an order, draw or physician fee at checkout, so compare what you’ll actually pay.
  • Buying several tests? Check whether one panel already includes them, so you don’t pay twice for the same biomarkers.

Blood work doesn’t have one price. A single test can cost less than a takeout lunch or more than a weekly grocery run, depending on the test, the seller, and the fees added at checkout.

Here’s what the most common blood tests cost without insurance, with live prices from every seller in the Labbrary catalog, what to watch for at checkout, and how to order.

What Blood Work Costs
Without Insurance.

Each row counts the one-time listings for that test in the Labbrary catalog, lab draws only. The bar runs from the lowest to the highest listed price, and the dot marks the typical (median) price, so half the listings cost less and half cost more. The chart sorts itself by typical price and updates as sellers change their prices.

02 / FEES

Why the Lowest Price
Isn’t Always the Total.

Listed prices are what sellers show before checkout. Some then add a fee once per order, for the physician who signs the lab order or for processing the requisition. Others add a separate blood-draw fee. A few sellers price tests lower for members, and Labbrary leaves membership prices out of these tables.

That’s why the cheapest listing can end up costing more than the next one. Before you pay, compare the checkout total for the exact test and lab location you’ll use. Each test page in the catalog notes the fees a seller publishes.

04 / HOW TO ORDER

How to Get Blood Work
Without a Doctor’s Visit.

Direct-to-consumer sellers, including Quest Health and Labcorp OnDemand, arrange the lab order for you as part of the purchase. You pay online, visit one of their patient service centers for the draw (or use an at-home kit), and get your results online.

Availability varies by state and by seller, so confirm a seller serves your state before you pay.

05 / INSURANCE

Cash Price
or Insurance?

Tests you order yourself are paid out of pocket, and every price in this guide is a cash price. If a clinician orders your blood work, coverage depends on your plan and the reason for the test, and many plans cover certain preventive screenings. If you have a high deductible, compare what your plan would charge with the cash price.

If you schedule care without using insurance, providers usually must give you a good faith estimate of the cost when you ask for one or book at least three business days ahead. IRS Publication 502 lists laboratory fees as medical expenses, so HSA or FSA funds can often pay for lab tests. Check your plan’s rules.

06 / QUESTIONS

Common Questions
About Blood Work Costs.

Short answers to what people ask most about paying for blood work.

How much would blood work cost out of pocket?

It depends on the tests. When you order them yourself, a CBC typically lists at $29, a CMP at $39 and a lipid panel at $39 in the Labbrary catalog, before any fees a seller adds at checkout.

How much does a full blood test cost?

There’s no single “full” blood test. A common routine set, a CBC, CMP, lipid panel and A1c, typically lists at $29, $39, $39 and $39 when ordered separately. Some sellers bundle them into one panel, so compare before you buy.

Are labs expensive without insurance?

It depends where you go. Direct-to-consumer sellers list their cash prices before you buy, and the tables above show today’s prices. If you book through a provider without using insurance, you can ask for a good faith estimate first.

Why is bloodwork so expensive?

The price can cover more than the lab test itself: collecting the sample, the lab’s processing, and sometimes a physician’s order or another added fee. Where you go matters too, so compare the total before you book.

Can I get blood work without a doctor’s order?

Yes. Direct-to-consumer sellers arrange the order for you as part of the purchase, sometimes for an added physician fee. Availability varies by state.
