Thyroid Test Cost: TSH, Free T4, T3 and Antibody Prices

What a thyroid test really costs without insurance, from a single TSH to a full panel with antibodies, with live prices from every seller in the Labbrary catalog and how to order.

One gland, very different prices: what each kind of thyroid test costs
THE SHORT VERSION

One Gland.
Very Different Prices.

  • You can order a thyroid test yourself, with no doctor’s visit, from Quest, Labcorp and online sellers that use their locations.
  • Quest Health lists its TSH test at $49, then adds a physician service fee at checkout. Labcorp OnDemand lists its Standard Thyroid Test, which measures TSH and free T4, at $89.
  • Price mostly follows the marker count. TSH alone costs the least, panels add free T4 and free T3, and full panels add two antibody tests. Typical lab-draw prices are just below, and the tables compare every listing, cheapest first.
  • Look past the listed price. Some sellers add physician, draw, or membership fees, so compare the total at checkout.

A thyroid test can mean a single TSH measurement or a panel of five or more markers. That’s why two “thyroid tests” can differ in price by hundreds of dollars, sometimes at the same lab.

Here is what each kind of thyroid test costs today in the Labbrary catalog, how to order one from Quest or Labcorp without a doctor’s visit, and what to check before you pay.

02 / WHAT’S INCLUDED

What Does a Thyroid
Panel Include?

Thyroid tests are sold marker by marker. Most listings are built from the same short list:

  • TSH, thyroid-stimulating hormone
  • Free T4, free thyroxine
  • Free T3, free triiodothyronine
  • TPO antibodies, thyroid peroxidase antibodies
  • Tg antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies

Some panels also list total T4, total T3, T3 uptake, or reverse T3, which is why marker counts in the tables above run from one to a dozen.

Names can hide differences. Quest’s TSH test, for example, runs a free T4 on the same sample only if the TSH result is abnormal, at no extra cost. That kind of “reflex” listing isn’t the same as a panel that always reports free T4, so compare the marker list, not the product name.

Which markers you need is a question for your clinician. This guide compares what each listing includes and costs. It doesn’t interpret results.

A REAL PRE-BUY AUDIT

“The same four thyroid markers plus one more, for $119 instead of $247.”

Labcorp OnDemand’s Custom Thyroid Test lists TSH, free T4, free T3, and TPO antibodies, drawn at a Labcorp location. LetsGetChecked’s Thyroid Antibody Test lists the same four markers plus thyroglobulin antibodies, from a finger-prick sample you collect at home. Same published marker names, not the same assay or collection method. The Labbrary+ Pre-Buy Audit runs this check on the panels you’re considering, biomarker by biomarker.

03 / QUEST

How to Order a Thyroid Test
From Quest.

Quest sells thyroid tests to consumers through Quest Health. Its TSH test is $49, and its Comprehensive Thyroid Test Panel, which adds free T4, free T3, and both antibody tests, is $149, before fees.

  1. Order the test on Quest Health. You don’t need your own doctor’s order. Quest adds a physician service fee at checkout, so check the final total.
  2. Visit a Quest patient service center. Quest says no special preparation is required for these tests, but some supplements and medications can affect results, so ask your healthcare provider if you’re unsure.
  3. Get your results online. Quest says TSH results typically arrive within one to two business days and the comprehensive panel within two to three, including a clinical review before release. An independent healthcare provider is available to discuss them.

Quest Health doesn’t sell tests in Arizona, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico. See Quest Health’s provider profile.

04 / LABCORP

How to Order a Thyroid Test
From Labcorp.

Labcorp OnDemand sells its Standard Thyroid Test, which measures TSH and free T4, for $89, and its Custom Thyroid Test, which adds free T3 and TPO antibodies, for $247.

  1. Order the test on Labcorp OnDemand. A healthcare provider reviews and approves the request, and no visit is needed.
  2. Schedule a visit at a Labcorp location, and read the preparation notes for your test. Labcorp asks you to stop supplements containing biotin at least 72 hours before either test, and its Custom Thyroid Test page asks for a 12-hour fast.
  3. See your results in your Labcorp Patient account. Labcorp says Custom Thyroid Test results are usually online within one to two days after your samples reach its lab.

Labcorp OnDemand accepts HSA and FSA cards for most of its tests. See Labcorp OnDemand’s provider profile.

05 / OTHER SELLERS

Online Sellers.
The Same Draw Sites.

Several online services sell thyroid tests that are drawn at Quest or Labcorp. They arrange the lab order and send you to a nearby patient service center. What changes is the price, the fees, and how long results take.

  • Mito Health lists its TSH test at $4.92. Its prices depend on which lab serves your state, and members of its optional membership pay less.
  • Marek Health lists its TSH test at $9, drawn at Quest. Results can take about two weeks, and Marek notes a separate blood-draw fee on custom orders, so check the total at checkout.
  • Personalabs lists its TSH test at $78 with the lab order included, drawn at Quest or Labcorp.
  • Walk-In Lab sells numbered thyroid panels, from its Thyroid #1 Baseline panel at $50 up to larger panels with antibodies and reverse T3.
THE QUESTION TO ASK

“Does this price include the lab order, the blood draw, and any physician fee?”

06 / AT HOME

Can You Check Your Thyroid
at Home?

Yes. Several sellers mail a finger-prick kit: you collect a few drops of blood and send them to a lab. LetsGetChecked’s Thyroid Antibody Test ($119) and Everlywell’s Thyroid Test ($149) both list TSH, free T4, free T3, and TPO antibodies, and LetsGetChecked adds thyroglobulin antibodies. imaware’s At Home Thyroid Test Kit is $79. Check its marker list before you compare it with a panel.

Kits have their own rules. LetsGetChecked asks you to collect your sample on a weekday morning and mail it the same day. Because a finger-prick kit and a lab draw collect blood differently, compare kits with kits and lab tests with lab tests.

07 / INSURANCE

Does Insurance Cover
a Thyroid Test?

Tests you order yourself are usually paid out of pocket, and every price in this guide is a cash price. If a clinician orders a thyroid test, coverage depends on your plan and the reason for the test, so check with your insurer.

Many direct-to-consumer tests qualify for HSA or FSA funds. Check each seller’s payment page before you pay.

What are the 5 tests for thyroid?

Thyroid panels are usually built from five markers: TSH, free T4, free T3, TPO antibodies, and thyroglobulin antibodies. Some panels also list total T4, total T3, T3 uptake, or reverse T3.

Can I check my TSH at home?

Yes. Some at-home kits include TSH, measured from a finger-prick sample you mail to a lab. Check each kit’s marker list and collection rules before you buy.

Does insurance cover a TSH test?

Do you need to fast for a thyroid test?

Usually not for TSH alone. MedlinePlus says your provider will tell you if other tests ordered at the same time need fasting, and some sellers set their own rules: Labcorp OnDemand’s Custom Thyroid Test page asks for a 12-hour fast. Follow the instructions for the test you buy.
