Modern health testing guide

Mycotoxins are chemical byproducts of certain molds. Urine mycotoxin panels estimate whether some of those compounds, or their breakdown products, are leaving your body right now. That is a narrower question than "do I have mold illness", and treating the two as identical is where most marketing in this category goes wrong. A well-chosen panel can add one useful data point to an exposure investigation. It cannot carry the investigation alone, and it says nothing about where any exposure came from.
Coverage
Panels group their analytes by the mold families that produce them. Coverage varies widely between products, which is a main reason two tests can disagree.
Produced by some Aspergillus molds. The most studied family, with established occupational exposure research behind the assays.
Common in water-damaged buildings and some stored foods. Frequently reported, and frequently the marker where dietary intake muddies interpretation.
Includes compounds linked to Stachybotrys, the mold most people mean by "black mold". Detection limits differ sharply between labs.
A newer addition on wider panels. Evidence connecting urine levels to indoor exposure is thinner than for the older families.
Honest limits
Common goals
Framed as goals, not diagnoses. People typically arrive here wanting to investigate a damp or water-damaged home, to add a data point alongside a professional building inspection, to track whether markers fall after leaving a suspect environment, or to bring something concrete to a clinician conversation. If your goal is a broad health baseline instead, a different category fits better and the quiz will route you there.
Practical differences
| Approach | Effort | Typical preparation | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single morning urine | Lowest | First morning void, normal hydration | Fast, but one unusual day can skew values |
| Two-day collection | Moderate | Two separate mornings, some labs suggest limiting certain foods | Smooths day-to-day swings, slower to complete |
| Dried urine card | Lowest | Saturate the card, dry, mail | Easiest shipping, narrower analyte menus |
| Provoked collection | Highest | Sauna or binder protocols before collecting | Inflates values by design and breaks comparability with reference ranges. Labbrary grades flag it |
Graded options
Demo Provider B
The widest demo panel, clinician review included, priced accordingly.
Demo Provider E
Strong measurement and clear reporting, coverage stops short of two mold families.
Demo Provider C
The budget entry. A small panel, so a negative result rules out less than it seems to.
Side by side
| Question | Wide panel with review | Focused mid-size panel | Budget screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demo example | Enviro-Myco Complete, A- | MycoScreen 11 Panel, B+ | HomeTox Mold Check, C+ |
| Best for | A thorough one-time investigation | A solid first look at common families | Deciding whether to look closer at all |
| Weakness | Price and a two-day collection | Two damp-housing families missing | Small panel limits what a negative means |
| Demo price | $289 | $199 | $149 |
Method
Every mycotoxin test is scored on the same eight dimensions used across the catalog, with published weights: measurement validity, evidence alignment, report usefulness, coverage honesty, privacy practice, access friction, value, and support quality. Provoked-collection protocols and undisclosed labs are graded down explicitly. Affiliate relationships never touch a grade.

Ask for the analyte list, not the marketing count. If your concern is a water-damaged building, check specifically for trichothecenes and ochratoxin A, and note which families a negative result simply cannot speak to.
A named lab lets you check certifications and methods. An unnamed lab is not automatically bad, but it removes your ability to verify anything, and Labbrary grades transparency down when the lab is hidden.
Compare the total cost of test plus review, not sticker prices. A $199 test with a $59 review add-on and a $249 test with review included are closer than they first appear.
Sauna or binder protocols before collection inflate values by design and break comparability with the lab's own reference ranges. Know whether the reference data assumes provoked or unprovoked collection before you interpret anything.
Look for sample destruction timelines, whether data is sold or shared for research by default, and whether deletion requests are honored and verified. The privacy section of each Labbrary review summarizes what is documented.

The markers, collection variables, evidence limits, and questions worth asking before you buy.
Analyte menus, detection limits, and collection timing explain most conflicting results.
Two different questions that marketing often blurs into one. When each is worth the money.
